Stress
Our ability to thrive and be happy depends largely upon the state of our mind and body. Unmanaged stress rarely occurs in a vacuum. It provokes additional problems such as depressed mood, anger, fatigue, relational problems, addiction and decreased performance. Some of the signs of stress can be: being on edge, having tension or fatigue, low energy, worrying, trouble sleeping, indecisiveness, perfectionist or procrastination tendencies and addictive behaviours. Stress management counselling can help stop the destructive downward spiral.

Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety comes in two categories: 1) common, helpful and short-lived, 2) excessive, chronic and recurring. It is normal for all us to experience some measure of anxiety throughout the day. It can help us finish an overdue project, study for an upcoming exam, maintain focus while tired, resolve conflicts that need addressing. Anxiety becomes a disorder when it is recurring and seriously interrupts your desired functioning in your personal, relational or work life. Anxiety disorders can have a wide range of symptoms that affect ones thoughts, emotions and physical experience. Without treatment they will lead to a diminished life and decreased contentment.

There are five major types of anxiety disorders:

1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GSD)
Chronic anxiety, exaggerated worry and tension even when there is little or nothing that seems to provoke it.
2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Intrusive thoughts (or obsessions) causing anxiety that may be accompanied by repetitive behaviours (or compulsions) used to rid oneself of the initial thoughts.
3. Panic Disorder
Recurring and unexpected episodes of panic characterized by physical symptoms that may include rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, perspiration, trembling, stomach pain, or chest pain.
4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Anxiety that is developed after experiencing one or more traumatic events that was extremely threatening or caused great harm, physically and/or psychologically. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, sleep disturbances, sense of reliving past experiences and avoidance of triggers that remind one of the trauma.
5. Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder)
Overwhelming anxiety and self-consciousness in daily social situations. It includes persistent and intense fear of being watched or judged by others and embarrassing yourself in front of others. Can include blushing, sweating, heart palpitations, nausea, difficulty speaking, or trembling.

Therapeutic Treatment
People experiencing anxiety disorders do not need go on being overwhelmed by anxiety. With the proper assistance they can live more fulfilling and productive lives. Counselling Therapy has been proven to be effective in helping treat anxiety disorders.

Specific Therapies
Prior to applying any therapy, it is important for the client and therapist to work together at determining the nature of the anxiety and the desired outcome such as to not have recurring intense symptoms, to be calmer, enjoy life more, enjoy people more, not fear or avoid. Once that is determined your therapist may propose various forms of therapy to work at obtaining the desired results. Depending upon which anxiety is being treated, the therapies we use with our clients may include: Psychotherapy, CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), EMDR, Gradual Exposure Therapy, ERP (Exposure Ritual Prevention), Psychodynamic Therapies, Supportive Therapy, EFT (Emotion Focused Therapy), Depth Therapies and Interpersonal Therapy.
